Priya Rakhra

By the age of 14 Priya was already teaching at Mahila College, Lucknow, having gained her Nritya Vishard at the age of 10.  She has been teaching throughout most of her career as a dancer.

Currently she holds regular classes in Kathak and Odissi in West London.

Hounslow

Time:       Saturdays, 1.00 – 5.00 pm 

 

Priya was the first Odissi guru to make an impact with the teaching of Odissi in the UK and over the years her students have represented the Odissi style in a large number of functions.  Two of her students were awarded Aditi scholarships (Bina Patel in 1992 and Isha Persad in 1993). 

After many years training a number of her students perform professionally around the world.

Workshops

Priya regularly gives workshops.  Her annual workshops include:

Oslo (from 1983)

Summer workshops in Oslo, Norway at the Damini House of Culture, invited by Shika Chandra.

Priya also prepares students for their Alahabad University examinations which from the 2nd year onwards they take at the Pt. Ram Sahay Institute in London.  Dr Francis Shepherd travels to Norway for the 1st year exams.  Five of the initial students are now themselves teaching, giving workshops and lecture demonstrations.

Aberystwyth (from 1995)

Workshops for the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, invited by Dr Daniel Meyer-Dinkgrafe.

 

Madrid (from 1998)

 Summer workshops in Madrid, Spain for Pushpalata Asociacion para Difusion del Arte de India invited by Rocio Arce Garcia, President.   The organisation runs a dance school headed by Priya, a library on Indian arts, a dance costumes and instrument store and a magazine about events relating to Indian culture.
